One Monday morning back in May, my brother Pat called me and said that he woke up knowing that we had a song to write.
A year and a half earlier, his pastor, Jack Graham of Prestonwood Baptist in Dallas, told the story of a man who was dying. His son was sitting with him, and asked "Dad, what's it like to die". His dad was a man who knew Jesus, and knew what his destiny was, and said "I feel like a little boy on Christmas Eve". This story touched him deeply, but he never dreamed that it would be anything more than a goal for himself... that he be able to feel that way and be as excited when he faced death someday (and every day) as this old man.
That was until that Monday morning, when God decided that He had other plans, and this song was born.
Now, our hope and prayer is that this message will touch others as deeply as the story it's based on has touched us, and that we'll know that no matter what troubles we face (even death), we can feel the joy and excitement of a little boy on Christmas Eve because we know what God has in store for us.
May God bless each and every one of you with the knowledge of His love and companionship.
A little boy of six years old
Awake on Christmas Eve
Can't get to sleep for wondering
What Santa Claus will leave
Is it sugar plums and candy?
Or a bike of shiny red?
So many different visions
Are flyin' through his head
A young man set to marry
The great love of his life
Can't wait until tomorrow
When she becomes his wife
His heart is filled with laughter
As his eyes well up with tears
He knows he's found a love that will
Outlast a million years
(Chorus)
His bright eyes filled with wonder
For the day that lies ahead
He isn't sure what's coming
But he has no fear or dread
And when he wakes up tomorrow
Heaven's treasures are in store
His prayers will all be answered
And even so much more
An old man on his death bed
Waiting for this life to end
Surrounded by his loved ones
His family and friends
His eyes are fixed on Jesus
And time slows to a crawl
His heart is truly bursting
As he hears the Master's call
(Chorus)
He will be there with the King of all the ages
The One who gave His life to set us free
He will behold the promise he's been given
To reign with God throughout eternity
He will live with God for all eternity
When he wakes up tomorrow
